Why should I hire an attorney for my estate planning over a legal document assistant?

Answer:

A legal document assistant ("LDA") is not authorized to practice law and can only provide assistance to you at your own specific direction.  In other words, by law an LDA is only permitted to provide boilerplate language depending on the information you provide to them.  If they provide legal advice, then they are acting in an unethical manner and are practicing law without a license.  In doing so, they will violate any malpractice insurance coverage they carry, if any.  Moreover, many do it yourself planners fail to realize that they do not know all of the information that they should supply to the LDA.  In essence, when you do it yourself you are taking the law into your own hands and are taking a stab in the dark.  What you don't know may hurt you or your heirs deeply.  Mr. Edwards has seen first hand self-help planning that was so poorly devised and crafted that it would have led to terrible consequences for the client had corrective steps not been implemented.

An estate planning attorney, in contrast, is a superior choice for the following reasons: 1) they know issues that you will likely fail to address; 2) they can tell if you are going down the wrong road with your planning decisions; 3) they undergo years of intense training and the rigors of the state bar exam; 4) they are dedicated to continual research and knowledge acquisition concerning their profession; 5) they usually, as this firm does, carry malpractice insurance; 6) they are policed by the State Bar of California and informally by their peers and professionals in related fields; & 7) your conversations with them are protected by the attorney-client privilege.

Though Mr. Edwards is an attorney, he goes to a Physician, a mechanic, a CPA, and other professional advisers.  Moreover, Mr. Edwards has served other professionals for their estate and business planning needs including doctors and attorneys.
